Alexandra Meier was born in Basel, Switzerland where she developed a passion for theatre and music, performing in children’s theatre, singing in choirs and playing the cello. She currently studies on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with John Evans. Her studies are supported by the Herbert and Theresie Lowit Memorial scholarship. Previously, she graduated with a Masters of Performance in vocal studies, supported by the Roches-Utiger Stiftung.

Alexandra is a 2022/23 Britten-Pears Young Artist, where she will participate in a masterclass on opera arias with Antonio Pappano, Julia Faulkner and Gweneth Ann Rand.

She has performed at Theater Basel as “Der Trommler” in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, and “Anneli” in Dai Fujikura’s Der Goldkäfer. With the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz she played “Hänsel” in a semi-staged performance of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel.

Before coming to London, she studied at the Hochschule für Musik Basel with Isolde Siebert and participated in masterclasses with Margreet Honig and Marcel Boone. During this time she developed an interest in contemporary music, performing works by Toshio Hosokawa, Luciano Berio, György Kurtág, and collaborating with various composers on new pieces. In London she has had the opportunity to continue this passion, performing pieces by Luigi Nono and Morton Feldman with the Ubu-ensemble and performing one act operas by composers on the Guildhall Opera Course.

In oratorio she has sung Vivaldi’s Gloria and Händel’s The Messiah with the Basler Madrigalisten. Her previously performed oratorio repertoire also includes Mozart’s Requiem, H.I.F. Biber’s Missa Bruxellensis, E.T.A Hoffmann’s Miserere, and Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.
