Edinburgh-born Soprano, Catriona Hewitson began her training at the City of Edinburgh Music School with Fiona Milne before studying for five years at the Royal Northern College of Music under Debborah Rees and receiving a first class BMus (Hons) degree and a Postgraduate Diploma with distinction. She continues her studies at the Royal College of Music with Janis Kelly for her Masters. She has won several prizes including the Clare Croiza Prize for French Song, the Chris Petty English Song Competition, the Cuthbert Smith Prize as well as being a finalist in the Frederic Cox Award for Singers and the Elizabeth Harwood Memorial Award, she also came second in the Lies Askonas Competition.
Highlights on the concert platform include performing in St Martin-in-the-Fields as part of the Brandeburg Choral Festival, making her debut in the Bridgewater Hall singing Szymnovski’s Stabat Mater and touring Northern Ireland with the Ulster Orchestra. She has performed recitals for the Scottish Arts Club and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as well as in Manchester, London and recorded a half hour recital for the radio programme ‘Classics Unwrapped’. She sings for the BBC Radio 4 Daily Service Singers, London Voices, the Orchestra for the Age of Enlightenment Chorus, Caledonian Voices, Ludus Baroque and was a member of the National Youth Choir of Scotland.
Last autumn, Catriona worked with English Touring Opera covering the roles of Sophie - Werther and Yniold - Pelléas et Mélisande. Other roles include Ida - Die Fledermaus (with John Copley), Emmie - Albert Herring (RCMIOS), Amore - Orfeo ed Euridice, Harry - Albert Herring, Marta - Company, Wife - Paradise Moscow (RNCM), First Young Tree/Squirrel - Paul Bunyan (British Youth Opera), Ensemble - Giove in Argo (London Handel Festival/RCMIOS), Amour - Orfeo and Eurydice (Winterbourne Opera) and Belinda - Dido and Aeneas (Ebarocum Baroque).
Recent and future performances include working with Opera Holland Park in their productions of Iris (Mascagni), La Boheme and Queen of Spades across the length of the summer season. Catriona will be making her debut with Magnetic Opera in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival playing Musette - La Boheme. She will also be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe to perform a recital with Ingrid Sawyers.
Catriona is an RCM Scholar who is supported by the Emma Rose Memorial Award and is also generously supported by the Josephine Baker Trust, Hope Scott Trust, the James Caird Travelling Fund, the Cross Trust and PS.
