The German lyric baritone Christoph Engel was born in Berlin and started his singing
studies with Romanian soprano Leontina Vaduva in Paris. Since 2015 he studies with
Dutch baritone Marcel Boone at the Hochschule für Musik Basel (Switzerland). In June
2018 he obtained his Bachelor's degree. Currently he studies in a Master Performance
at the Hochschule für Musik Basel. In the past one could hear him as Figaro and Conte
di Almaviva in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro in a production of the Hochschule für Musik
Basel as well as Don Quijote in Manuel de Falla's chamber opera El retablo de Maese
Pedro. In June 2018 he performed Frank in Donizetti's mad opera I pazzi per progetto
during the Opernfestspiele Zürich 2018. During the season 2018/2019 Christoph is
member of the Studio of the Opéra de Lyon where he gave his role and house debut as
Ramiro in Maurice Ravel’s L’heure espagnole in a new production by James Bonas and
Grégoire Pont in November 2018. Furthermore he regularly performs with the
International Choir Academy Lübeck under the baton of Rolf Beck which led him to the
Rheingau Musik Festival (W. A. Mozart C Minor Mass), Tongyeong International Music
Festival in South Korea (J. S. Bach Weihnachtsoratorium) and the Usedomer
Musikfestival in Gdansk (J. S. Bach B Minor Mass). In addition to this Christoph sings
regularly recitals and developed a particular passion for the French repertoire. He
performed among others melodies by Henri Duparc, Gabriel Fauré’s L’horizon
chimérique, Histoires naturelles and Don Quichotte à Dulcinée by Maurice Ravel and
Quatre Chansons de Don Quichotte composed by Jacques Ibert.
