Daniel Hayes is a bass-baritone currently singing in the chorus at Göteborgs Operan, Sweden, he made his debut in their production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, singing the role of Zio Yakusidé. Daniel completed his MMus at the RNCM and graduated with Distinction in 2018. Daniel was successful in gaining a place in the Gold Medal Competition in his final year at the RNCM. He also completed his undergraduate at the college which he graduated from with a First Class Honours degree in 2016.
Whilst studying Daniel performed in many operas both at the RNCM and across the Northwest and further afield. His recent roles at the RNCM include Le Roi in Massenet’s Cendrillon (cond. Martin André, dir. Olivia Fuchs), Steve Sankey in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene (cond. Clark Rundel, dir. Stefan Janski), Snug in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (cond. Andrew Greenwood, dir. Garth Bardsley) and as Blansac (La Scala in Seta, Rossini), Massetto (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Dr Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rossini) and Don Magnifico (Cerententola, Rossini) in RNCM Opera Excerpts, and as chorus in the RNCM production of L’Elisir D’amore (cond. Francesco Pasqualetti, dir. Stefan Janski).
Outside of the RNCM, Daniel has performed as Colline (Boheme, Puccini) with Flat Pack Music, the title role in Gianni Schichi with Opera Shack, as Bartolo (Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart) and Sciarrone (in Tosca, Puccini) for Opera On Location, as chorus (in Don Giovanni, Mozart) for the Bowden Opera Festival and as Aeneas (in Dido and Aeneas, Purcell) with Vox Aurum Choirs both in the northwest and San Paulo Dentro La Mura (Rome).
Daniel grew up participating in many choirs including, Canzonetta, Vox Aurum, Laudamus Youth Choir and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. As a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Daniel has performed in 3 BBC Proms series concerts, notably as part of the chorus in Beethoven’s 9th symphony with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel Baremboim. Daniel will be featured as the soloist on their upcoming release of Mantyjarvi’s Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae.
Whilst completing his undergraduate at the RNCM Daniel performed in many concerts with the RNCM Chamber Choir, including the UK premier of Crepuscular Hour (Maja S K Ratkje) at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and many appearances with the Halle Orchestra and Choir including Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the Hallé Choir and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (cond. H K Gruber).
