The Manning Prize for Tenors (2015)
David Powton is currently in his final year of the MA in Opera course at RWCMD, generously funded by the RWCMD from the Leverhulme and Manning scholarship prizes and studying with Adrian Thompson and Nicki Rose. David was a Samling Scholar for two years taking part in Samling Academy master classes and concerts as well as Samling Academy Opera productions. Previous operatic roles include Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas, Purcell), Mr.Belville (Rosina, Shield), The Mayor (Albert Herring, Britten), Sam (Trouble in Tahiti, Bernstein) and Jimmy Mahoney (Mahagonny, Weill). David has performed as a soloist with Royal Northern Sinfonia and RNS Chorus and is a member of and soloist with award winning choir Voices of Hope. Concert performances include Seven Last Words from the Cross (Macmillan), I Never (Lang, premier), Vivaldi Magnificat, Mozart Requiem, Mozart Mass in D Major, Schicksalslied (Brahms), Child of Our Time (Tippett), Beethoven Mass in C Major and The Little Match Girl Passion. Recent performances include The Mayor in Albert Herring and Cockerel/Woodpecker in The Cunning Little Vixen both with RWCMD. Future engagements include the role of Basilio in The Marriage of Figaro with RWCMD.
