‘Helena Leonard (Leonora) fielded tone as steady as a rock and instinctive breath of phrase, and she has all the notes easily at her command, which is saying one hell of a lot’ Rodney Milnes, Opera Magazine
‘Splendidly dramatic in both arias. Both very finely sung throughout the range with an amazingly exciting top to the voice and a rich range of colours. Very good’ Donald Maxwel, 2013
‘Verdi once demanded that Lady Macbeth should possess “a rough, hollow, stifled voice”. He would have been disappointed in Helena Leonard. Hers was a voice of power and vitality and she had a stage presence that more than ably captured the persona of Macbeth’s venomous wife’ Lady Macbeth, Scottish Opera Go Round (Dundee Courier) ‘The opera’s principal singing role is really Lady Macbeth, and the soprano Helena Leonard gives a powerful account of her.’ (The Scotsman) ‘Without orchestral colour, the skills of designer Tom Piper and lighting designer Bruno Poet are invaluable too. Indeed, the scene change from farmhouse to the Macbeth’s castle is achieved purely through lighting and Helena Leonard’s acting as Lady Macbeth. She, as much as any in the cast, seems to appreciate the chance to let both her voice and acting become liberated by the scale of the production.’ (The Stage Online) ‘Scottish Opera swept into town and stunned an Arts Guild audience with the awesome sound of a soprano…
It is an excellent voice, a Lyrico Spinto….. Warm, flexible, expressive with a powerful top just the right sound for the big Verdi soprano roles (and there aren’t many of those around)!!’ Personal recommendation: Rosalind Plowright
