Soprano, Léonie Maxwell is studying for her Masters of Music at the Royal Northern College of Music with Sarah Rhodes.
She began her professional singing career as a chorister at Wells Cathedral. As well as singing the daily services she performed solos with Dame Emma Kirby, Jools Holland, and the Cathedral Choir in Messiah (Händel) and Stabat Mater (Pergolesi). She appeared on a number of broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and 4, and recorded discs for Hyperion and Regent, including music by Leighton and Bednall; the latter a Gramophone Editor’s Choice. Whilst studying for her BA(hons) in French and Italian at the University of Manchester she was a member of the University Chamber Choir, and was the soprano soloist in their performance of A Child of Our Time (Tippet).
Léonie is a member of the BBC Radio 4 Daily Service Singers. Highlights of her solo work include Flora, Turn of the Screw (Britten) and Sorella Cercatrice, Suor Angelica (Puccini) with Manchester Opera Ensemble, Ein Deutches Requiem (Brahms) and The Nelson Mass (Haydn) with Chester Bach Singers. She has received coaching from Janice Kelly and Linda Ormiston on roles from Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), The Cunning Little Vixen (Janáček) and Little Women (Adamo). As part of the Dorset Opera Festival, Leonie performed in the chorus in both Faust (Gounod), directed by Christopher Cowell, and Le Comte Ory (Rossini). Leonie joined Opera on Location as a member of the chorus for a performance of a new translation of Carmen (Bizet). Recent highlights include the role of 1st sprite Cendrillon (Massenet), performing the soprano solos in Judas Maccabaeus (Handel) with Wigan Choral Society and Petite Messe Solenelle (Rossini) with the Keele Bach choir. Upcoming engagements include First Lady, Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) with the Berlin Opera Academy and Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass with the St George’s choral society.
Recent highlights have involved performing the role of 1st sprite in the RNCM production of Cendrillon (Massenet) dir. Olivia Fuchs and cond. Martin André, performing the soprano solos in Judas Maccabaeus (Händel) with Wigan Choral Society and Petite messe solenelle (Rossini) with the Keele Bach choir, cond. by Neil Taylor. Upcoming engagements include First Lady, Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) with the Berlin Opera Academy and Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass with the St George’s choral society.
