Loretta Hopkins studied music at the University of Edinburgh and Birmingham Conservatoire, where she gained a postgraduate diploma, generously supported by the South Square Trust. In competition, Loretta was a finalist in Birmingham Conservatoire’s Mario Lanza Prize and in the ‘Internationale Sommerakademie’ opera prize organised by the Vienna Conservatoire (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien).
Opera roles include ´Mimì´, La bohème; ´Fiordiligi´, Cosi fan tutte; 'Countess Almaviva', Le nozze di Figaro; ´Adina´, L'elisir d'amore; ´Micaëla´, Carmen; ´Lisa´, The Queen of Spades; 'Greta Fiorentino', Street Scene and ´Kate Pinkerton´, Madama Butterfly. At Opera Holland Park Loretta has performed in productions of Le nozze di Figaro, Eugene Onegin, and Falstaff as well as the role of a Sprite in Fantastic Mr Fox by Tobias Picker and The Aunt in Madama Butterfly. Since then, Loretta has covered the roles of ´Violetta´, La traviata and 'Donna Anna', Don Giovanni for Winslow Hall Opera and covered the roles of 'Lauretta', Gianni Schicchi and 'Nedda', Pagliacci for the Grimeborn Opera Festival.
Loretta is keen to find ways to present opera to new audiences: the opera-review show, Belle Canto’s Opera Hour: Tales of Love and Lies, was developed to tour to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Loretta co-wrote, produced and performed as ‘Belle Canto’ in this original production with a cast of five singers which tied together scenes from different operas with a specially commissioned script.
In 2014 Loretta established the Dulwich Opera Company, along with bass-baritone David Fletcher, to promote opera performances in the Dulwich area and beyond and provide opportunities for professional singers at the start of their careers. The company is producing an annual programme of semi-staged concerts and fully-staged performances of works, in their original languages.
