A young British soprano, Lucy Mellors is in her final year of the Opera Performance course at the Seligman Opera Studio at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Roles include Clorinda in Rossini's La Cenerentola, directed by Martin Constantine and conducted by David Jones (RWCMD, March 2018), Nella in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi with the orchestra of Welsh National Opera, conducted by Carlo Rizzi (RWCMD, November 2017), Rose Maurrant in Kurt Weill's Street Scene, directed by Martin Constantine and conducted by Wyn Davies (RWCMD, July 2017), Bubikopf in Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, directed by Polly Graham and conducted by Harry Ogg (RWCMD, March 2017) and the title role in Handel's Semele (a collaboration between RWCMD and Mid Wales Opera in February 2017, director Martin Constantine, conductor Nicholas Cleobury). She has performed the role of Lucy Lockit in Gay's The Beggar's Opera with Opera'r Ddraig (2015). Lucy has recently worked with LiveArtShow on their new dance opera Sunshine Living playing the role of Cherie, and has performed new works at the Ludlow English Song Weekend. Future engagements include the role of Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute in July 2018.
Lucy is the 2017 winner of the Valetta Iacopi Aria Prize, the Dolan-Evans Memorial Prize, and the Phillipa Seligman Award for Excellence.
As an Assistant Director, Lucy has worked with Welsh National Opera on their production of Crew! (2015), RWCMD for their production of Falstaff at the Sherman Theatre (2016), and for English National Opera on their autumn 2016 Opera Squad project. Directing credits include Britten's The Little Sweep for Pocket Opera, as well as Bute Park Opera's double bill of Vaughan Williams' Riders to the Sea and Berkeley's A Dinner Engagement.
Hailed as "divine" for her performance as Semele by Wales Arts Review, Lucy has a background in classical acting having worked as an actor for three before pursuing singing.
Lucy graduated from the University of Kent with a First Class Honours degree in English and Drama, where she held a violin scholarship. Upon graduation, Lucy joined The Pantaloons theatre company, where she remained for three years, performing in national tours of Much Ado About Nothing (Hero), Macbeth (Lady Macbeth), A Christmas Carol (Belle), Romeo and Juliet (Juliet/Tybalt), The Canterbury Tales (Second Nun/Emily), Grimm’s Fairy Tales (Dortchen) and The Importance of Being Earnest (Cecily). She performed at The Globe as Vittoria (The White Devil), Pandora (The Woman in the Moon) and Celia (As You Like It) under Andy Kesson for GestureLab. Other roles include Rita (I do not like thee, Dr Fell - Darwin Missing Link), Viola (Twelfth Night), Nora (A Doll’s House) and the title role in Antigone (all for APHRA), Brenda in Road (The Oast House), Snowball in Animal Farm (Lumley Theatre), Ellen in Foreign Lands and Sharon in Peepshow (both for the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury).
Lucy then studied on the postgraduate vocal course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying under Janet Price, and was generously supported by the Richmond Douglas Charitable Trust. Engagements during the course included Belinda (cover) Dido and Aeneas, Sforza Productions; Cerberus Orpheus in the Underworld, Opera Ddraig; and La Reinette L’Enfant et les Sortileges for Bute Park Opera She also performed Goose 1 (cover Moppet) at the Wales Millennium Centre in Martin Constantine's award-winning production of Britten's Paul Bunyan.
