Mary Burman has been singing as a freelance opera singer since 2005 with companies including Scottish Opera, Opera North, Opera Holland Park and Reisopera in The Netherlands. She trained originally as a Post Graduate at the Guildhall with the renowned teacher Walther Gruner, after studying for a degree in Music and Drama.
Having been lucky enough to have a Grandmother who was a dramatic soprano and a Mother with a rich contralto voice, perhaps it was inevitable that she would develop a voice somewhere in between as a mezzo-soprano. Following many years settled in Exmouth, happily combining raising a family with teaching piano and singing, Mary became a founder member of the Exeter Bach Society. Bach is her great passion and singing the Alto solos in The Saint Matthew Passion in Exeter Cathedral was a high point amongst many oratorio performances.
After the trials of ill-health and losing her voice for eighteen months, Mary has had the good fortune since 1997 to study and rebuild her vocal strength with Ian Comboy, at Dartington and Totnes. Eventually this led to travelling far and wide on numerous contracts to sing with Opera Companies and at concerts and events both in the UK and abroad.
Recordings include works by Donizetti and Rossini with Opera Rara, with the Geaffrey Mitchell Choir. and backing Gerald Finlay for Chandos records.
Broadcasts have included a World premiere of a Ronald Stevenson work with Scottish Opera Chorus.
Un Ballo in Maschera was Mary's most recent contract with Opera North, in 2018, and in Devon she appeared during the summer of 2019 as the Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
