Canadian-Australian soprano Rachel Pines is known for her “sparkling, nuanced” singing (Cut-Common magazine). Rachel is equally at home on the operatic and concert stage, and has performed as a soloist for Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Gertrude Opera, Brisbane City Opera, Musica Viva and the Indemini Festival. She currently sings full-time in the Deutsche Oper Berlin chorus.

Rachel’s notable operatic roles include Fiordiligi/Così fan tutte (online production), Zerbinetta/Ariadne auf Naxos (Ensemble Q, conducted by Simone Young AM); Queen of the Night/The Magic Flute (Opera Australia Schools Tour, Brisbane City Opera, Gertrude Opera); Dafne/Apollo e Dafne (staged by Brisbane City Opera); Frasquita/ Carmen (Queensland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alondra de la Parra); Tytania/A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Despina/Così fan tutte; and Erste Dame and Papagena/Die Zauberflöte.

In 2019 Rachel toured Australia as Roberta in the children’s chamber opera Da Vinci’s Apprentice with Musica Viva, and premiered A Church Made of Glass by Eliot Gyger with Opera Queensland. In 2017/2018, Rachel created the role of Mary Sullivan in the review musical Songs from Stage and Screen (produced by The Seven Sopranos), and toured with the group throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Rachel’s concert repertoire includes Beethoven’s aria “Ah, Perfido!”, soprano solos in Handel’s Messiah, Hayden’s Paukenmesse and Theresienmesse, Monteverdi’s Vespers, Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses, and cantatas, chamber, and concert works by Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi and Purcell. Ms. Pines has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra singing the arias of Olympia/Les contes d’Hoffmann, Adele/Die Fledermaus, and Queen of the Night/The Magic Flute, and in recital at the Indemini Festival (Switzerland) in 2021.

Last year Rachel was a finalist in the International Concours de Chant Georges Liccioni (France). She won second prize in the New Zealand Aria Competition (2018). Other awards include the Elizabeth Muir Memorial Prize for Postgraduate Singers (Queensland Conservatorium, Australia) and the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition (Canada).
