Australian born Lyric Tenor Simon Chalford Gilkes is a graduate of the Royal College of Music where he received a Masters in Vocal Performance with Distinction in 2013 as a Cuthbert Smith Scholar supported by the Richard Carne Charitable Trust and was previously a Richard Carne Scholar at the Royal College of Music, London. Previously Simon has completed his Bachelor of Music, studying with Maree Ryan, in 2007 and then an Advanced Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Opera School in 2010. Whilst studying, Simon has also had the opportunity to work with world-renowned singers and coaches, such as Michael Lloyd, Michael Rosewell, Christopher Middleton, John Fraser, Christopher Glynn, Simon Kenway, Nicole Dorigo, Janice Chapman, Philip Langridge, Janis Kelly, Simon O’Neill, Yvonne Minton, John Pringle and Tony Legge. Recently, Simon was the Winner of the Joan Carden Award and the George and Margaret Henderson Travelling Scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is supported by the Opus 50 musical trust and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust.
In Opera, Simon has performed with a number of companies and schools, such as Opera Australia, English Touring Opera, Sydney Chamber Opera, Tete a Tete Opera, Size Zero Opera, Royal College of Music International Opera School and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Opera School and has also covered for Scottish Opera and English Touring Opera. With these companies, Simon has performed a variety of roles, including Peter Quint (Turn of the Screw), Fenton (Merry Wives of Windsor), Grimoaldo (Rodelinda), Bajazet (Tamerlano), Arnalta (L’Incoronazione di Poppea) Don Curzio (Le Nozze di Figaro), Le Mari (Les Mamelles de Tiresias), Mr Upford (Albert Herring), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), The Schoolmaster (Cunning Little Vixen), Frosch and Blind (Die Fledermaus) L’Anglais (Angelique) and the Husband (Hin und Zurueck).
Simon has featured as tenor soloist on numerous occasions with the Sydney Symphony Fellowship, Sydneian Bach Choir, London Orpheus Choir, Sydney University Graduate Choir, the Combined Churches Choir, Sydney Conservatorium of Music Choir and Chamber Choir, Willoughby Symphony Choir, Sydney Conservatorium Early Music Ensemble, Christ Church St Laurence, Bel A Cappella, Sutherland Choral Society, Coro Innominata, the Tavernor Consort, the Allegri Singers, the Mitchell Conservatorium Orchestra, Bathurst, and the Orange Regional Conservatorium Choir and Orchestra performing a variety of works such as Handel’s Messiah and Saul, Haydn’s Creation and Nelson Mass, Bach’s St John Passion, B Minor Mass, Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio and Monteverdi Vespers, Mozart’s Requiem, Sparrow Mass and Coronation Mass as well as Beethoven’s Mass in C and Brett Dean’s Winter Songs.
