Welsh soprano Elen Lloyd Roberts recently graduated with an MA Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music, where she was taught by Mary Nelson and Christopher Glynn.
At the Academy, Elen was a soloist and chorus member for the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series and was selected to sing in the Chamber Choir. In 2018 she made her Wigmore Hall debut as part of the Open Academy Music for the Moment series.
In 2014 she graduated from Durham University with a BA (Hons) in Music, and while there, performed extensively with Durham Opera Ensemble, and as a soloist and chorus member with the University Chamber Choir. While at Durham, she was a participant of the prestigious Samling Academy, with whom she performed in concerts and masterclasses throughout the Northeast. Most notably, she took part in their production of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortileges, where she performed the role of La Chauve-Souris and covered the title role.
Other operatic roles include Susanna, Le nozze di Figaro (Berlin Opera Academy), Marzelline, Fidelio; Zerlina, Don Giovanni (OPRA Cymru), Despina, Così fan tutte (Instant Opera), Drusilla, L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Hampstead Garden Opera), 1st Lady, Die Zauberflöte; Belinda, Dido and Aeneas; Valencienne, The Merry Widow (Durham Opera Ensemble), and Gretel, Hänsel und Gretel (Royal Academy of Music Opera Scenes). She joins Mid Wales Opera over the Easter period to sing Venus in their production of Venus and Adonis.
As an experienced choral singer with a passion for singing early music, Elen sings with several professional choirs and ensembles, including Chamber Choir of London, Eboracum Baroque, Philharmonia Chorus and Mousai Chamber Choir.
Elen returns regularly to Wales to compete in Eisteddfodau. Recent successes include 1st prize in the classical solo category at the 2017 National Urdd Eisteddfod, and reaching the final of the W. Towyn Roberts Scholarship at the 2018 National Eisteddfod. Other competition successes include reaching the finals of the Dunraven and the MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year competitions. She was also a semi-finalist in the Bach Singers’ Prize at the 2017 London Bach Festival.
Oratorio highlights include Handel's Messiah, Bach’s Johannes Passion and Matthäus Passion, Mozart's Sparrow Mass, Haydn’s Little Organ Mass and Fauré's Requiem. She has participated in masterclasses with Sir Thomas Allen, Teresa Cahill, Roderick Williams, and Lucy Crowe.
