Norwegian mezzo soprano Siv Misund is one to watch of the new generation of dramatic voices emerging from the Nordic countries.
Misund completed The Norwegian Academy of Music MFA degree in 2007. Since then she’s worked regularly with London-based voice teacher Michael Harper and vocal coach John Lidal in Oslo. She has also studied with prominent professionals such as Dolora Zajick, Fiorenza Cossotto, Trish MacCaffrey, Laura Brooks Rice, Anthony Manoly and Kamal Khan. In 2010 she won the Ellen Kirby Smith Rice Scholarship to Princeton’s CoOPERAtive program and in 2011 the KammerOper Schloss Rheinsberg prize, that earned her the role of Nutrice in L’incoronatione de Poppea which was well received. She placed second in The Fulham Opera Robert Presley Memorial Verdi Prize 2017 and in 2020 she was a semifinalist in the Lauritz Melchior International Singing Competition for young Wagnerian voices.
Misund has in recent years sung several of Verdis leading mezzo roles such as Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera (Opera på Skäret) Amneris in Verdis Aida (Oscarsborg Operaen), Eboli in Don Carlo (Fulham Opera), and Azucena in Il Trovatore (Winslow Hall Opera), all of which earned her rave reviews from audience and critics alike. Other roles include Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana), Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia), Dinah (Trouble in Tahiti), Flosshilde (Das Rheingold), Zita, (Giannis Schicchi), Frugola (Il Tabarro), Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), and Witch (Hansel und Gretel). She has worked with companies such as The Norwegian National Opera, Ringsaker Operaen, Bergen National Opera, Arctic Philharmonic, Oslo Opera Festival, and many more houses and festivals. Upcoming engagements include Azucena in Il Trovatore with The Kristiansund Opera, Verdi’s Requiem with Opera Nordfjord and “Jazz ain’t nothing but soul” with Tabanka Dance Ensemble.
