Matthew Clark was born in Bedford and studied singing with Rachel Nicholls before undertaking a BMus in composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He now studies singing with Bronwen Mills and is a bass Lay Clerk at Gloucester Cathedral. He has also sung regularly with a variety of choirs including the BBC National Chorus of Wales, the Armonico Consort, Cantemus Chamber Choir Wales and the Choirs of Llandaff Cathedral. As a soloist he has sung various solo roles with several different ensembles in the South West & South Wales with music including Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit, Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Mark Bowden’s commission We have Found a Better Land as well as the requiems of Fauré, Duruflé, Howells and Brahms.
As a composer Matthew has written a large amount of vocal music, both solo and choral. He has been commissioned by ensembles in London, Cardiff, Bristol and most recently a new work for Candlemass for Gloucester Cathedral Choir, setting words by Kay Westoby; premiered in Gloucester Cathedral in February 2017. Other works include motets, song cycles and a mass setting as well as instrumental works, both chamber and orchestral. Matthew has also performed as a conductor, having formed his own choral ensemble, Côr Cyfoes while an undergraduate and directed the Serenata Singing Group from November 2015 until his move to Gloucester in July 2016.
