Covered Covered & Performed Scenes Premiere of New Work Concert COVID-cancelled
Alice Howell was the impressive soloist in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. Vaughan Williams’ warm scoring and rich choral textures created a sumptuous effect at the start; Alice took all the soprano and alto solo sections, soaring splendidly over the orchestral colours, in particular in the exalted phrase that closes the work. After the interval came Poulenc’s Gloria. Alice brought a beautiful, even tone and legato to the sinuous lines of the soprano solo, and the final pages of the work, in particular, created a compelling atmosphere of spirituality. - Philip Young (2023)
Alice's voice is broad ranging both in pitch and colour, and she used these qualities to good affect throughout the evening in a programme which was varied and excellently presented. If I had to choose a highlight from her recital it would be her two songs by Quilter, which were beautifully sung by any standards. I particularly enjoyed her interpretation of 'Les Chemins de l'amour' by Poulenc; but her songs in German and Italian, which formed the greater part of the programme, were equally confident, impressive and idiomatic. - Mary Nicholson, former ROH Chorus (2019)
If this concert was designed to showcase Alice's versatility, then it succeeded magnificently. She was as comfortable with Handel's stately Ode on the Birthday of Queen Anne as she was with the playful rush of Die Fledermaus. To a confident and assured soprano voice with a fine range she has added a new-found mastery of character, swapping easily from the wistful Mimi of La Bohème to Lehár's coquettish Giuditta. For Kurt Weill's Youkali she became a charming French chanteuse. Alice gave us fifteen pieces in her concert, moving easily and fluently between French, German and Italian. The audience would have been glad of more. No-one who saw this concert could doubt that Alice is on the way to great things. But don't forget us, Alice. We'd love to hear more. - Victor Gray, MBE (2019)
Soprano, Alice Howell's light and euphonic solos were a particular highlight, perfectly befitting the chamber setting. Haydn, always a pious man, once wrote: "When I think upon my God, my heart is so full of joy that the notes dance and leap from my pen." This sentiment abounded in the St. Richard Singers' bright and blissful performance throughout; I'm sure he would have approved. - Bruno Newman (2018)
Suffolk born soprano, Alice Howell graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (2021) where she gained a First Class BMus Honours degree in Music Performance - Voice. She received a bursary award from 'Friends of East Suffolk Performing Arts' to support her degree. Alice has performed in Prague, Germany and in various venues across the UK, including: Symphony Hall in Birmingham; cathedrals in Salisbury, Chichester, Winchester and Leeds; and in churches and theatres in London, Suffolk, Norfolk, Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire and West Sussex. She frequently performs as a soloist for wedding ceremonies and funerals.
Choral works, where Alice was the soprano soloist, consist of: Charpentier’s ‘In navititate Domini nostri H.421’, Poulenc's Gloria, Vaughan Williams' 'Serenade to Music' (soprano and alto solos), Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, Philip Ledger’s Requiem, Haydn’s ‘Missa Sancti Nicolai’, Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major, Mendelssohn’s ‘Hear My Prayer/O for the Wings of a Dove’ and Faure's Requiem. She recently worked as a cantor for Our Lady of Hal Catholic Church, Camden (2023) and in 2018, she was a choral scholar for Arundel Cathedral.
Alice's other recent performances include a range of arias, songs and ensembles in: 'Women in Opera', 'A Night at the Musicals' and 'A Spring Cabaret' in Banstead, 'Carol's Christmas' in Central London, 'The John Nicholson Memorial Concert' at The Actors' Church in Covent Garden and performances with Froxfield Choir, as their frequent soprano soloist.
Alice specialises in classical singing, though also has a background in musical theatre and straight acting training. In addition to this, she has extensive dance training including ballet, pointe work, tap, modern, jazz, contemporary and commercial. She also writes and performs her own songs while accompanying herself on piano and she enjoys writing poetry. Alice has been an adjudicator for the classical singing category of Stars of the Albion Festival & Contest (March 2023).
