Alicia Gurney is in her first year of the MA in Vocal Studies at the Royal Academy of Music studying with Ryland Davies and Audrey Hyland. She sings in the chorus for the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series and has performed in opera scenes as Sesto (Giulio Cesare), Idamante (Idomeneo) and Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), as well as chorus for Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. She has also completed the Birkbeck Certificates of Higher Education in Concert Singing and Opera with Distinction; roles in scenes include Bertarido (Rodelinda), Idamante (Idomeneo), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), the Minister (Into the Little Hill) and Helen (King Priam), and performed with the Morley Baroque Consort in Southwark Cathedral and Handel House Museum.
In 2013, she was interviewed on Resonance FM for the Renaissance FM show, singing music by Purcell, and performed in opera scenes with City University Opera Ensemble, including Handel’s Orlando and La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica). Last year, she enjoyed coaching singers at City University for their production of Hänsel und Gretel.
She covered the role of Háta and sang in the chorus for British Youth Opera’s production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride in 2012, also singing in the BYO Easter Workshops that year. Other roles include Dorabella, (Così fan tutte - Elemental Opera), and 2nd Witch/Chorus (Dido and Aeneas - Iris Theatre).
She won 2nd prize in the Association of English Singers and Speakers’ Courtney Kenny Competition in 2010 and holds the DipABRSM in Singing with Distinction. She sings regularly at St Simon Zelotes’ Church in Chelsea and with several choirs including the Herschel Singers, the Syred Consort and Convivium Singers.
