The light and agile voice of Belgian soprano Aline Giaux has not only made her well suited for soubrette/character roles, but also shows exceptional ease in the higher coloratura range. With most of her early training taking place in the youth opera choir of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (Brussels), Aline Giaux sang under the baton of conductors such as Hervé Niquet, Alain Altinoglu, Ludovic Morlot and Hartmut Haenchen, feeling at home on the opera stage from an early age.

Aline began her academic journey with two undergraduate courses, first in Music Education and then in Vocal Performance, at the IMEP (Institut Royal Supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie, Belgium). Her voice tutors in Belgium included Eunice Arias, Benoît Giaux, Elise Gäbele and Ana Camelia Stefanescu. She then completed her Master’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, under the tutelage of Scott Johnson and Lorna Anderson. Aline was honoured to be supported by Help Musicians UK as a recipient of their Postgraduate Award during her second year in Glasgow.

During the 23-24 season, Aline was a member of the Opera Studio of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie (Liège, Belgium), where she studied with Patrizia Ciofi, and made her professional solo debut as Joliette in ”Patiente mon coeur”, a new opera for young audiences by Lionel Polis. For the 24-25 season, she moved on to specialize in Baroque repertoire with Sophie Karthaüser as a member of the new Studio Baroque in Namur, a collaboration between the IMEP and the CAV&MA.

Always eager to sing in her native language, French, Aline was awarded joint First Prize in the A. Ramsay Calder Debussy Prize for Voice and the Norma Greig French Song Prize in May 2023.

Aline has performed the full role of Zima (Les Indes Galantes) in Benslow Music’s historically informed production of Spring 2022. She was also cast as Atalanta (Serse), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia), Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Sophie (Werther) and the Dew Fairy (Hänsel und Gretel) for selected opera scenes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Her first professional opera engagement as a freelance chorus member took place in Spring 2023 with Scottish Opera’s production of Puccini’s Trittico. She now continues her opera chorus career in Aachen (Germany).

Aline has always been particularly active in the choral music scene (not only as a singer, but also as an apprentice conductor), allowing her to sing large-scale choral works with professional ensembles such as the Belgian National Orchestra, Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal de Wallonie, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Sinfonieorchester Aachen. She also has extensive experience in church music from working with the Ensemble Vocal de l’Abbaye de la Cambre (Brussels) and the Glasgow Cathedral Choir.

Early on in her studies, Aline also developed a strong interest in pedagogy, music theory, languages and phonetics, research in vocal anatomy and resonance… all things that tie into the art of teaching vocal performance. As of summer 2024, she is an officially qualified voice teacher. No matter where her performance career takes her, it will always bring Aline great joy to pass her knowledge and skill on to others.
