Born in Kazakhstan in 1987, Andreï Zhdanov is a baritone whose career is deeply rooted in opera. Initially trained in electrical engineering (graduating in 2009 in Chelyabinsk, Russia) and acoustics (Master's degree in 2011 at the University of Maine, France), he soon redirected his path toward the stage, inspired by an immersion at the Chelyabinsk Opera Theater. There, he worked alongside prominent figures in singing and musical direction, shaping his passion for operatic performance.
In 2015, he began vocal studies at the Chelyabinsk Conservatory to refine his technique, complementing his education with a diploma in choral conducting from the Tchaikovsky Institute in 2019. This year was pivotal, as Andreï joined the class of renowned French baritone Francis Dudziak at the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot, where he earned a Superior Diploma in Performance in 2022. In May 2024, he achieved the prestigious "Artist Diploma," further solidifying his operatic expertise.
A laureate of several international competitions in Russia (Kazan, Chelyabinsk, and Saint Petersburg in 2018-2019), Andreï has distinguished himself through his powerful stage presence and commitment to opera. His French debut came in 2021 at the Festival de l’Abbaye de Sylvanès, where he took on a central role in the oratorio "Une Voix dans le silence" by Raphaël Lucas. In 2022, he participated in the contemporary opera "Andrias Scheuchzeri," an ambitious adaptation of Karel Čapek's novel "War with the Newts," presented at the "Tête à Tête" Festival in London in 2024.
On stage, Andreï has embraced a variety of roles, demonstrating his versatility in both classical and modern repertoire. As a member of the SEQUENDA opera studio in Luxembourg, he hones his craft under the guidance of esteemed mentors such as Umberto Finazzi, Luisa Mauro, and Renata Lamanda. Regularly cast as a soloist or cover for principal roles, he has performed in productions that highlight his dramatic depth and vocal expressiveness.
Beyond opera, he is also active in concert repertoire, particularly in sacred music. Since 2021, he has collaborated with pianist and organist Christophe Maynard on a program of sacred works, performing in iconic venues such as the Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montligeon, and the Église Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas.
With a foundation built on rigorous training and diverse stage experiences, Andreï is dedicated to the operatic art form. His repertoire spans Russian romances, grand opera arias, and Neapolitan classics, showcasing his commitment to vocal excellence. As he continues to refine his technique and stage presence, he remains devoted to bringing opera to life with authenticity and passion.
