• “Why is it that whenever I hear the Schubert Ave Maria, it is as if I am hearing the voice of an angel, except when she sings it? When she sings it, it is as if I am hearing the voice of a repentant prostitute.” -- Octogenarian Concert Attendee, Carmel Mission, CA
AnnaMaria’s award-winning contralto has been praised in the United States and Europe for its dark warmth and bewildering size, which she brings to roles that uniquely embody the simultaneously earthy and ethereal character of this most deeply feminine voice type. The current year has seen her busy with Wagnerian repertoire! She has managed to be cast in every one of the Ring Cycle’s contralto roles, in venues around the country, before returning to debut her first Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Scicchi with Opera West.
She has performed Gotterdammerung's Erste Norn in venues from Lincoln Center to the Wagner in Vermont Festival. There, in 2024, she also debuted her first Erda and will add Schwertleite to her return in the full 2025 Ring Cycle. Other favorite roles of hers include Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria Rusticana with Opera West and La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, which she has performed countless times with various companies worldwide. She is a recipient of Notre Dame’s prestigious Harvey Award for the Performing Arts.
Beyond opera, her portrayal of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music earned the American Prize in Musical Theater, and she has appeared as a solo recitalist from the Kennedy Center to international broadcast television. Her work as a Spanish classical guitarist has brought her equal notoriety for virtuosity. She tours as half of the flamenco ensemble El Duo Duende and has over 15 successful albums to her credit, many as a soloist and one as a collaborator on a CD including John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and Adam Levine.
More importantly, however, she places her music at the service of a mission and uses whatever attention or revenue it generates to support a cause even nearer to her heart. A proud service-disabled vet, her groundbreaking intelligence work in Iraq and Afghanistan exposed human rights abuses against our world’s most vulnerable, which she continues to combat through the work of the emerging Catholic community to which she's vowed.
