Ash Howard is a mezzo soprano from York who has been singing chorally from the age of six. Now based in London, he graduated with distinction in his MMus (vocal studies) at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music as the recipient of the Kathleen Roberts Vocal Scholarship, and was the winner of the 2024 Soloist’s Competition and placed second in the Hearn Foundation Vocal Competition. He has participated in several masterclasses, including singing for Thomas Quasthoff at Wigmore Hall and Roderick Williams with Hurn Court Opera.
Most recently he performed as a Young Artist at Waterperry Opera Festival, in both a gala show and chorus (Barber of Seville). His operatic roles have included Dr Blind (Die Fledermaus) with St Paul’s Opera, The Voice (Tales of Hoffmann) with Heber Opera, Second Spirit (Die Zauberflӧte) with Cardiff Opera and Smeton (Try me, Good King) with Trinity Laban. As part of Trinity Laban’s opera scenes he has performed multiple roles, including Sesto (La Clemenza di Tito), Tancredi (Tancredi), Mutter (Hänsel und Gretel) and Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann). He also joined Trinity Laban in their side-by-side project as Olga (Eugene Onegin).
Alongside performing, Ash also takes an interest in behind-the-scenes processes, working as an assistant stage manager for The Opera Makers at Grimeborn and as stage manager for Trinity Laban opera scenes whilst also performing roles. He continued to develop this through the last year by studying with British Youth Opera’s Serena Fenwick Programme for Stage Managers.
