Mezzo-soprano Charlotte Bateman has recently completed her studies at the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and remains under the tutelage of Elizabeth McCormack.
Charlotte’s operatic roles include Mrs Grose (The Turn of the Screw) and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) with Bristol University Operatic Society, Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), and Lady Victoria Wotton (Dorian Gray) with LoveOpera (a company that she co-founded), Imperial Commissioner (Madama Butterfly, cast as a mezzo role) with Opera Bohemia and Mrs Nolan (The Medium), Dorothée (Cendrillion) and Idamante (Idomeneo) at the Alexander Gibson Opera School, RCS. Her performances in scenes include Mercédès (Carmen), Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Bianca (The Rape of Lucretia) and Joseph’s Mother (Dead Man Walking). Charlotte was a Young Artist at The Grange Festival 2024, performing in the chorus for Tosca and The Rake’s Progress, and covering the role of Mother Goose. She also performed an excerpt of Nerone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) in The Grange Festival Cover Showcase. A vocal scholar at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, Charlotte studied her undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2018 with a BA(Hons) in Music. In 2022 she graduated from RCS with an MMus (Performance), where she held the Sheila Osborne Scholarship for Mezzo-Soprano, going on to attain an MMus (Opera) in 2024.
Charlotte was a finalist in the French Song prize and Governor’s Recital prize at RCS. She held a Help Musicians Sybil Tutton Opera Award for 2022-23, and was the grateful recipient of an RCS Trust Scholarship.
