Charlotte Forfar grew up in Dwygyfylchi, a small village on the outskirts of Conwy, North
Wales and began singing at the age of 7 under the guidance of Welsh mezzo soprano Sian
Wyn Gibson. Charlotte’s love for performing began at a local musical theatre group,
Llandudno Youth Music Theatre, and she has performed regularly at various venues across
North Wales.
Her first experience of performing in an opera was in a school production of Purcell’s Dido
and Aeneas. It was at this point she set her mind to classical singing. Charlotte continued
studying with Sian Wyn Gibson through secondary school and attended the William Mathias
Music Centre where she studied with Mary Lloyd Davies. In 2015 she gained a place at the
Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama studying under Scottish soprano, Lorna Anderson.
In 2019 she graduated with a first-class honours degree and In 2020 Charlotte with a
postgraduate certificate in Music Performance with distinction. Charlotte is delighted to be
joining the prestigious David Seligman Opera School in September 2020.
Charlotte has performed in various college productions including Susanna in The Marriage of
Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Miles in The Turn of the Screw, Fiametta in The Gondoliers
and covered the role of Harry in Albert Herring. In Charlotte’s final year of her undergraduate
degree she made her debut with Welsh National Opera performing in the chorus and
covering the role of First Mother in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking at the Wales Millennium
Centre, Cardiff.
Charlotte was delighted to join the chorus of Dorset Opera Festival in their 2021 season
performing Don Giovanni (Mozart), Cosi fan Tutte (Mozart) and Acis and Galatea (Handel).
During her time at the Royal Welsh College she has been lucky to work with well renowned
performers such as Rebecca Evans, Kathryn Harries and Joseph Middleton. In 2020 she
performed alongside tenor Nicky Spence and pianist Simon Lepper in a performance of
Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared. Charlotte was delighted to win the Adelina
Patti prize for opera students in July 2021.
Outside of college Charlotte has a passion for outreach and making music more accessible for members of the community. She has been involved in projects with the BBC and the Welsh National Opera working with primary school children as well as asylum seekers in Cardiff.
In 2017 Charlotte performed in the chorus of Tosca at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod with Sir Bryn Terfel, Kristine Opolais and Kristian Benedikt. She was delighted to return to this production in 2018 at the Abu Dhabi music festival again with Sir Bryn Terfel, Kristine Opolais and Vittorio Grigolo.
As well as a passion for opera Charlotte enjoys giving recitals and has performed in the lunchtime concert series at All Saints church in Penarth as well as performing regularly at the Conwy Classical Music Festival. In 2019 Charlotte was a semi-finalist in the Somerset Song Prize and has a particular passion for German Lieder.
In 2018 Charlotte premiered a work written by Edward-Rhys Harry, Spring Offensive as well as performing Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man with the Harlow Chorus and the British

Sinfonietta. 2019 saw Charlotte performing as the soprano soloist in Duruflé’s Requiem and Karl Jenkins’ Requiem with Dartington Community Choir; she was praised by ‘Seen and Heard International’ “where her bell-like clarity was absolutely ideal for the role.” She has also performed Mozart’s Sparrow Mass with the Ross-on-Wye Choral Society.
Charlotte has been a choral scholar with the BBC National Chorus of Wales since 2016 and has performed in many of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall as well as the Last Night of the Proms where in 2019 she performed as a soloist. She has also performed as a session singer with the BBC in collaboration with British Council Wales.
Charlotte’s studies at the David Seligman Opera School are generously supported by The Dame Shirley Bassey Trust, the Rath / Underwood scholarship, a Philippa and David Seligman award, The James Pantyfedwen trust, the Leverhulme trust and she is a Help Musician Sybil Tutton award holder.
