Edmund enjoys a wide-ranging career encompassing opera, oratorio, solo and chamber work, both in the UK and internationally. His training began as a treble at Bath Abbey, after which he went on to sing with the choirs of King’s College, Cambridge and New College, Oxford, followed by further study at the Royal Academy of Music.
He has been lucky enough to have created several new roles in opera, including Gabriel in Hagar in the Wilderness by Sally Beamish for the Presteigne Festival with Opera Nova, and Peter in The Blank Canvas by Spyros Syrmos for OperaUpClose. Also for OperaUpClose he has sung the roles of Remendado in Bizet’s Carmen and Nik in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West. Other highlights include Arioch in Handel’s Belshazzar (Theatre du Capitole, Toulouse), Sailor in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Academy of Ancient Music), Harlekin in Ullmann’s Der Kaiser Von Atlantis (Grimeborn Opera Festival), Cinea in Hasse’s Cajo Fabricio for the London Handel Festival, Jupiter in Handel’s Semele and Orfeo in Monteverdi’s opera of the same name For Hampstead Garden Opera, and Lysander in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shadwell Opera).
Appearing several times with Garsington Opera, he was supported by the Alvarez Foundation, understudying the title role in Offenbach’s Vert-Vert. He has sung for the Aix-en-Provence festival chorus, most recently in their double bill of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide and Iphigénie en Tauride. For many years he has sung as a member of the Monteverdi Choir, with notable highlights including Berlioz’s mammoth Les Troyens and Benvenuto Cellini, as well as Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.
In concert, Edmund has performed the majority of the oratorio canon, often in some rather exotic settings. He was the tenor soloist for the first ever performance of Handel’s Messiah in Goa, together with the Symphony Orchestra of India, as well as a massed performance of the same piece in the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi. Together with Tcheky Karyo he helped to create an anthology of songs and poetry from the first World War, on tour in Picardie and Paris. In Paris also he performed a song recital at the Parisian British Ambassadorial Residence together with Matthew Fletcher. He appeared on tour across Israel with the Israel Camerata, singing the arias in Bach’s St Matthew Passion. He has performed live on BBC R2, R3 and R4 and has appeared on recordings with the Monteverdi Choir, Gabrieli Consort, Academy of Ancient Music and Fiori Musicali.
Although primarily a classical singer, Edmund can also be found on the soundtracks to many major Hollywood blockbusters, from The Avengers: Infinity War to Barbie, as well as the odd appearance with a barbershop quartet. He is a proud Bristolian, and in his spare time he can be found rock climbing in the Avon Gorge.
