Emily Brown Gibson
Languages (fluent):
English, French
Toronto-born soprano Emily Brown Gibson is rapidly gaining recognition as a versatile performer with a specialism in baroque and contemporary repertoire. She is currently a Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist.
Emily has a particular passion for early opera. This past winter, she joined the chorus at the Palais Garnier with the Opéra national de Paris in Castor et Pollux, directed by Peter Sellars and conducted by Teodor Currentzis—a production she will rejoin at the Salzburg Festival in August 2025. In February, she toured with Utopia, also under Currentzis, performing Purcell’s The Indian Queen.
Recent operatic appearances include The Fairy Queen (Second Fairy, Attendant, Solo Soprano) with Hampstead Garden Opera, La Frascatana (Violonte) and Le astuzie femminili (Bellina) with New Chamber Opera. Additional credits include Venus in The Judgment of Paris with Benslow Music, Elisetta in The Secret Marriage, Grilletta in The Apothecary, and Galatea in Acis and Galatea, all with New Chamber Opera Studio.
Emily’s love for early music extends to the concert stage. She recently performed in Brighton Early Music Festival’s French Connections, featuring works by Lully, Charpentier, and Carissimi. Other engagements include Mozart’s C Minor Mass with The Instruments of Time and Truth, and Handel’s Messiah with the Stowe Preservation Trust. As a former scholar with the Oxford Bach Soloists, she has appeared as a soloist in several of their concerts.
Equally committed to new music, Emily enjoys close collaboration with living composers. She recently reprised the role of Daughter in Kerrin Tatman’s Requiem for a Fading World, which she premiered the previous summer at Sage Gateshead. In 2022, she made her Wigmore Hall debut, performing Anna Þorvaldsdóttir’s Hvolf and Rain under the composer’s guidance. With Orchestra VOX, she has appeared as the soprano soloist in Hans Abrahamsen’s Let me tell you, Michael Gordon’s Van Gogh, and the world student premiere of Steve Reich’s The Cave.
In addition to her solo work, Emily is an experienced ensemble singer. She performs regularly with Kantos (Manchester) and Consensus Vocalis (Netherlands), and is a former VOCES8 Scholar, having performed with the group on several occasions.
Emily holds an MMus in Vocal Studies and Opera (Distinction) from the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studied with Mary Plazas, her current teacher. She also holds an MSt in Music (Distinction) from the University of Oxford, and a BMus in Classical Voice Performance (Honours) with a minor in Early Music from McGill University.
