Covered Covered & Performed Scenes Premiere of New Work Concert COVID-cancelled
Irish soprano Helen Hancock is known for relatable, authentic performances and engaging storytelling. She has performed in recital, baroque, and chamber music concerts in venues and festivals all over Ireland. Hancock’s collaboration with German pianist Paul Cibis began with their recital Zweisamkeit (Two Togetherness) which was performed in Würzburg, Germany in June 2024 as part of Zeitgeist Irland 24, an initiative of Culture Ireland and The Embassy of Ireland, Germany. This programme was studio recorded in Berlin and will be released as TOGETHERNESS on the Navona records level in September 2025. Hancock and Cibis continued their collaboration with a new recital programme Under (the light of) that same moon in Ireland in 2025 and will perform again in the RIAM Whyte Hall in Dublin in February 2026.
As an artist, Hancock embraces risk taking and is keen to push the boundaries in programming and presenting classical music. She has given premieres and made first recordings of several new music works by Irish composers. Four first recordings of songs by contemporary Irish composer Criostóir Ó Loingsigh are included on her album as is a first recording of a lied by Anne Marie O’Farrell. Helen gave the world premiere of Phosphoresence by Irish composer Christopher Moriarty in September 2023 with him on bass clarient and with Annalisa Monticelli piano. Hancock performs the role of Molly in Lady Gregory in America, an opera by Alberto Caruso with libretto by Colm Toibín at the annual Yeats Autumn Gathering in Gort, Co. Galway in September 2025.
Born and raised in Dublin, Hancock spent her school years playing piano, recorder ensemble, and singing in choirs. Hancock studied singing at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin part-time while at university studying engineering. She was heavily involved in choral singing during her engineering career but after starting her family she left her career to return to music. She attended courses in choral conducting and became choral director of several choirs. Hancock began serious vocal studies in 2015 with RIAM Professor Owen Gilhooly-Miles at the Mid-West Vocal Academy in Limerick, Ireland until 2021; she then studied with U.K. based Christine Cairns until 2025 and now studies with U.S. based Valerie Sorel. Hancock augmented her lessons with summer schools and coaching abroad including intensive periods of coaching in Berlin, Germany with Tim Ribchester and Gerhard Gall, supported by bursaries from the Irish Arts Council.
