Scottish mezzo Helen Stanley is a recent graduate of the Opera Course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she was awarded the Philippa and David Seligman Awards for Excellence. She was also a Leverhulme Trust Scholar. Helen previously studied at Trinity College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.

At RWCMD Helen has performed the roles of Marcellina Le nozze di Figaro, Mistress Quickly Falstaff and The Witch Hansel and Gretel. She has also performed Juno in the RWCMD co-production of Semele with Mid Wales Opera, touring theatres in Wales. Most recently, she performed Popova in The Bear at both RWCMD and at the home of the composer in Ischia, Italy. Other notable performances have included an opera gala accompanied by the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, a concert of Borodin songs with the Gould Piano Trio and the RWCMD Gala at Buckingham Palace for HRH The Prince of Wales.

Outside college, Helen’s operatic roles have included the title role in Dido and Aeneas, Isabella L’Italiana in Algeri, Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia, Olga Eugene Onegin and Dorabella Così fan tutte. This summer she is performing the role of Fidalma in Il Matrimonio Segreto with Pop Up Opera, touring across the UK until the end of July. She is also interested in contemporary opera, and has been involved in performances of new music theatre works at the Grimeborn, Tête à Tête and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals.

Helen regularly appears as a soloist at St Martin-in-the-Fields, most recently in Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music accompanied by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. She has also performed Bach St John Passion and Magnificat, Vivaldi Gloria, Handel Messiah, and Dixit Dominus, Mozart Requiem and Haydn Nelson Mass as a member of the St Martin’s Voices ensemble. Away from St Martin’s, her concert and oratorio repertoire spans works by Pergolesi, Bach and Handel to Verdi, Duruflé and Rutter. She has appeared as a soloist in Schmitt La Tragedie de Salome with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and in Daniel-Lesur Le Cantique des Cantiques with the BBC Symphony Chorus at the BBC Proms.
