'For us there was one performance which stood out above all the rest and this was James [Schouten] as Loge … James combined wonderful delivery of the text, great German, clarity of text, thought behind the text … character excellent. The thing about Wagnerian singing is combining everything isn’t it? Character, voice, text, acting and drama; and James came by far the nearest to that ideal.’ - Sir John Tomlinson - Carole Rees Awards - Mastersingers Wagner Vocal Competition 2024 https://seenandheard-international.com/2024/10/mastersingers-at-25-tenor-james-schouten-and-soprano-lorna-mclean-receive-2024-carole-rees-awards/ (2024)
'..James Schouten shines as a camp and fabulous advisor to Woran, his voice rings out crisp and bright across the hall. Schouten seems tremendously at ease breaking up the Wagnerian stasis with levity and movement.' https://www.london-unattached.com/das-rheingold-regents-opera/ (2022)
'James Schouten's foppish Loge, a hustler-in-chief who has borrowed his costume from the back of Russell Brand's wardrobe, punches through nicely.' https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/das-rheingold-review-is-this-slimmed-down-wagner-the-future-of-opera-hd72gx975 (2022)
'There are vivid performances too from James Schouten’s slippery Loge, his tenor ringing out in this vibrant acoustic' https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/14/das-rheingold-review-regents-operas-lean-and-mean-wagner-packs-a-punch (2022)
