Hailing from Donegal, Ireland, John is a graduate of Royal Academy Opera and University of Ulster. He currently studies under the tutelage of Rosa Mannion. Also, an alumnus of the Georg Solti Accademia and Les Azuriales, John has found professional advance as a former Young Artist for Garsington Opera and Northern Ireland Opera. More recently he was declared a finalist in Accademia Teatro alla Scala competition.
Operatic roles include: Jupiter Semele, Alfred Die Fledermaus, Tamino The Magic Flute, Rodolfo La bohème, Nemorino L’elisir d’amore, Pedrillo Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tony West Side Story, Kornélis La princesse jaune, Anthony Sweeney Todd, Basilio Le nozze di Figaro, Borsa Rigoletto, Nadir The Pearl Fishers, Rinuccio Gianni Schicchi, Beppe Rita, Spoletta Tosca and Ulysses Ulysses, A Musical Odyssey (Laurence Roman; première) and opera scenes including: Bill Flight, Graf Albert Die tote Stadt, Pylade Iphigénie en Tauride and Il Duca Rigoletto.
The 2019/20 Season saw John return to Northern Ireland Opera in the roles of Alfred in Die Fledermaus and the Narrator in The Chronic Identity Crisis of Pamplemousse, he also joined The Belfast Ensemble for the world premiere of Abomination: A DUP Opera and made his debut as Tamino in The Magic Flute with Waterperry Opera Festival.
This Season John became part of Northern Ireland Opera’s Northern Songs project and teamed up with Jackdaws Music Education Trust to perform as part of their award-winning education project OperaPLUS. September saw John make his debut at the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival in the role of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, as well as Aeglamour in the world premiere of Ina Boyle’s children’s opera Maudlin of Paplewick. He travelled to France in October to perform Jupiter in Handel’s Semele, November saw him perform as a soloist in the premiere of MASS by composer Conor Mitchell and December as tenor soloist in Messiah with Salon Opera.
On the concert platform, John has performed works including personal favourites Bach’s St John Passion; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Also confident in recital John enjoys breathing life into characterful song cycles such as Schubert’s Schwanengesang, Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, and Finzi’s Til Earth Outwears.
From 2016 – 2018 John was an integral part of the Marketing Department at Wigmore Hall, London. He continues to work on freelance Arts Marketing Projects in his spare time.
