Countertenor Joshua Garvey was born in 1988 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Praised for their sensitive interpretations, Joshua’s voice possesses a rich, warm tone that lends itself equally to ensemble and solo singing. They are a promising emerging artist and perform regularly in the USA, as well as their new home, Germany.

Joshua has made numerous appearances in operatic productions; most notably, as a young artist with Haymarket Opera (Chicago, IL), singing the role of Ottone in L’incoronazione di Poppea. Other roles include Ozias in Juditha Triumphans (Eudaimonia - Boston, MA), Athamas in Semele (CT Baroque - Simsbury, CT), The Spirit in Dido and Aeneas (Longy Early Music - Cambridge, MA), and Amore/Valletto in an English language production of The Coronation of Poppea (Opera Vivente - Baltimore, MD).

As a concert soloist, Joshua performed Britten’s Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac (Longy - Cambridge, MA), Porpora’s Salve Regina (Longy Early Music - Cambridge, MA), Gott soll allein mein Herze haben, BWV 169 (First Lutheran Church - Boston, MA), and Arvo Pärt’s My Heart’s in the Highlands and Gregory W. Brown’s Three Songs for Countertenor (First Church in Boston - Boston, MA). Most recently, they collaborated with members of the viol consort, Long and Away, to present selections from John Dowland's Lachrymae and A Pilgrimes Solace, as well as the Boston premiere of John Harbison’s The Cross of Snow; this concert was sponsored by the Gian Lymen Silbiger Grant with the purpose of bringing awareness to and empowering the LGBTQ community.

As an ensemblist, they have performed as a member of Capella Alpirsbach (Alpirsbach, Germany - works by Isabella Leonarda and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani), Kammerchor der Frauenkirche (Dresden, Germany - Handel’s Messiah, Zelenka’s Missa votiva, and Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium and Matthäus-Passion), Boston Camerata (Boston, MA - Play of Daniel and a medieval version of Carmina Burana), Emmanuel Music (Boston, MA - Apollo et Hyacinthus), and Canto Armonico (Boston, MA - Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, BWV 226).

Joshua completed their Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at Towson University and Master of Music in Historical Performance at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. They studied historical singing under Aaron Sheehan, Pamela Dellal, and Anne Azema, and received training on harpsichord from Vivian Montgomery. They currently reside in Dresden, Germany, are a student of Flavio Ferri-Benedetti, and coach solo repertoire with Tim Ribchester and Walewein Witten.
