Mezzo–soprano

The greek mezzosoprano Katerina Roussou was born in Canada and studied singing at the Athens Conservatory of Music and Drama, meanwhile graduating from the National Technical University of Athens in the Department of Electrical Engineering. She received the “Maria Callas Scholarship” as well as a scholarship from the “A. Onassis Foundation” to study at the Royal Academy Opera Course (London) and the the Academy of Music of Ljubljana.
Katerina has sang the role of Carmen in the Greek National Opera’s new production ”Carmencitas”, an opera-balet for children based on the opera Carmen. She has sung the role of Marcellina in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” at the ETA-Hoffmann theatre in Bamberg (Sommer Oper Bamberg 2011), one of the 6 girls of Mahagonny in Kurt Weill’s “The rise and fall of the city of Mahagonny” at the Athens Megaron, the Third Lady in Mozart’s “Magic flute” and has performed one of the Flowermaidens in Wagner’s “Parsifal”. Her operatic experience also includes the roles of Cherubino and Marcellina in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”, Vava in Shoshtakovich’s “Cheryomushki”, Il Destino and Furia II in Cavalli’s “La Calisto”. She collaborates frequently with the Gothenburg Opera as a member of the choir.
As a soloist she is often invited to sing with orchestras such as the Athens State Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Greek Radio, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Athens Municipality, the Ljubljana Philharmonic Orchestra, Stockholms Blåsarsymfonikerna, the Chamber Orchestra of Ingolstadt, the International Bachakademiem, the Festival of the Aegean; in works such as Mozart’s “Requiem”, Mahler’s “2nd Symphony”, H. Berlioz “La mort de Cleopatre”, M. Hatzidakis’ “Ornithes” and D. Papadimitriou “Kavafis”.
Her oratorio repertoire include, among other, major works such as G. Rossini’s “Stabat Mater”, W.A. Mozart’s “Requiem”, C. Saint-Saens “Christmas Oratorio”, G. B. Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater”…
As a member of the choir of Göteborgsoperan, she has sung in their production of Norma and Amadeus live. She will be singing with Göteborgs Symfoniker Vokalensemble in a production of “The Rake’s progress” under Barbara Hannigan.
She has worked closely with the actress Magda Mavrogianni in a series of musical-theatrical performances about the lives of famous women: Frida Kahlo, Martha Freud, Clara Schumann, Carmen, the Duchess of Piacenza, performing them around Greece.
She has recorded excerpts from Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” (Marcellina) for BBC Radio3, 5 songs by Markos Dragoumis for the literary magazine “Nea Synteleia”, 2 songs on poems by Giorgos Karter for the national radio of Thessaloniki along with the dramatic cantata “Tanais” by Marielli Sfakianaki. Together with famous soprano Sonia Theodoridou, she has recorded Athanasios Simoglou’s songs on poems by the greek poet K. Kavafis (Orchestra Mobile, cond: Theodoros Orfanidis).
On Greek television, she has sung 4 songs of Manolis Kalomoiris from his song cycle “Magiovotana” with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Greek Radio unde the baton of Byron Fidetzis. On Swedish television, she has been participated in the weekly program Kulturstudion with journalist Kristofer Lundström, to talk about Maria Callas.
She is president of the association Grekisk Konstmusik I Sverige (GKiS), whose goal is to promote Greek culture through music in Sweden. GKiS has organised three major festivals in Stockholm at the Musikaliska concert hall, along with many other concerts and educational events.
