Known for her “beauty of tone, admirable legato, radiant stage presence” (-Revue L’Opéra) and “deep musical maturity” (-The Post and Courier) Israeli-Belgian Mezzo Soprano Mala Weissberg performed Angelina (La Cenerentola), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Fernando (Motzeuma), Le Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), Ino (Semele), Miles (The Turn of The Screw), Human (Plaything *North American premiere), Cendrillon (Cendrillon), Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte), Miss Todd (Old Maid and the Thief), Autumn (Service Provider), Bride (AVOW) and Third Spirit (Die Zauberflöte). A recipient of awards including title of “Musical Prodigy” from the State of Israel, Award Winner and Semi Finalist of the Cesti Baroque Competition, Award Winner from the Career Bridges Foundation, Excellence Scholarship Award from The Schulich School of Music, Finalist in the Wirth Vocal Prize Competition, First prize in the Westminster Voice Competition, recipient of America-Israel Cultural Foundation and Keren Ronen scholarships.
Recent performance highlights include soloist in International Women’s Day concert with Association Femme d'Europe in Brussels and in ‘Love, Beauty and Death in Venice’ baroque concert with Tafelmusik in Toronto. Mala graduated with her Bachelor's Degree from Westminster Choir College where she was a member of The Westminster Choir, featured soloists in Talbot’s Path of Miracles and in Brahms’s Liebeslieder Walzer, she performed at the Spoleto Festival USA (2019 & 2022), Carnegie Hall, The Kimmel Center under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin and toured North America and Asia as part of the choir. A Guest soloist in chamber concerts all around Israel including with the Young Israeli Philharmonic, Mishkenot Sha'ananim program as well as a soloist in “Kol HaMusica'' live radio broadcast from Jerusalem, she performed Beethoven’s Scottish Songs, Ravel’s Chanson Madécasses, Brahms’s Zwei Gesänge and Frank Bridges’ Three song for Mezzo Soprano, Viola and Piano.
Summer engagements include Young Artist with Opera Neo in San Diego, Lachine International Vocal Academy, OperaFest Sewanee, The CoOPERAtive program, Opera Viva!, Young Israeli Philharmonic and Mishkenot Sha’ananim program in Jerusalem. Mala participated in private and public masterclasses with top musicians in the field including Joan Dornemann, Matthew Polenzani, Andreas Scholl, Helmut Deutsch, Pierre Vallet, Wolfgang Holzmair, Kiera Duffy, Liz Upchurch, François LeRoux, James Vaughn, Warren Jones, Chen Rice and more. Mala graduated with her Master’s degree from the Schulich School of Music of McGill University.
Upcoming engagements include soloist at the Innsbruck Early Music Festival and Moritz in Max und Moritz with Oper Köln in 2026.
In her free time, Mala enjoys playing the violin and guitar as well as hiking, cooking, painting and caring for dogs and other animals.
