The Hungarian baritone, Máté Herczeg, completed his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg. He has been recognized in various competitions, including the Éva Andor Singing Competition 2018 (Second Prize) and the International József Simándy Singing Competition 2016 (Special Prize).
Máté Herczeg made his debut as a soloist on the opera stages of MÜPA Budapest in 2018, the Salzburg Festival, and Oper Schloss Maxlrain in 2022. After completing his studies at Mozarteum University, he returned to the Salzburg Festival in 2023, singing the leading role of „Vlad” in the world premiere of the new opera „Ping Pong” composed by Mischa Tangian for the festival. In 2024, he joined the Accademia del Belcanto Rodolfo Celletti as part of the Festival della Valle d’Itria’s Young Artist Program in Martina Franca, Italy. This year, he will perform as the bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah at the Great Hall of the Salzburg Mozarteum, as Friedrich in Wagner’s opera „Das Liebesverbot,” and as the title character in Vanni Moretto’s opera „Der Wassermann”.
His operatic repertoire includes among others Mozart’s Papageno („Die Zauberflöte”), Donizetti’s Malatesta („Don Pasquale”), Offenbach’s Jupiter („Orpheus in der Underworld”), Humperdinck’s Peter Besenbinder („Hänsel und Gretel”), Leoncavallo’s Silvio („Pagliacci”), as well as Tan Dun’s Seikyo („Tea: A Mirror of Soul”).
