Nami Shah was raised in Kenya singing Hindustani classical at home and Western classical voice as head of choir in school. At University she was part of Leeds Baroque Choir and Leeds Youth Opera. She was an intern at Glyndebourne and Opera North Education Departments during her summers in University and this inspired her love for working in music and with children.
Nami taught Western classical voice, lectured in music and directed opera scenes at KM Music Conservatory, India, founded by composer A. R. Rahman. She proceeded to learn German in Austria in 2015 and studied with Nasrin Asgari.
She then completed an opera course at Associated Studios in London and is now living and singing in London under the guidance of Anita Morrison. In 2019 she sang in R’Otello with Gafa Arts in London and in 2021 she sang Wellgunde, 2nd Rhinemaiden in their production of Götterdämmerung. She was a mentee on the Pegasus Opera Mentorship Programme for 2022 which was in collaboration with Glyndebourne Opera House. She has just sung the role of Iris in Ensemble Orquesta’s Semele in May 2024. In July 2024 she shared the titular role of Medea in Medea Gosperia (A new production by Thee Black Swan Theatre and Opera Company).
She often travels back to Kenya where she works with Baraka Opera Kenya, giving concerts and doing performance project work creating 'story-concert performances' aimed at primary schools. She believes in giving back to the community that raised her, hence her work with Kenyan companies such as the Ghetto Classics Choir. They are a part of The Art Of Music in Kenya and Nami ran a children's choir in the Korogocho slums.
Nami also enjoys teaching little ones and ran 'Music For Little People' Classes in 2012 in Leeds and directed a children's play based on an Indian Mythological story in 2022. She is also a mum of two wonderful little boys.
