Mezzo-soprano Nina Schumertl, born in Erding, gained her first stage experience as a long-standing member of the children's choir of the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Youth Choir.
From 2017 to 2021, she studied elementary music education and classical singing at the University of Music Würzburg, with Prof. Christianne Stotijn, among others. She has been continuing her studies since October 2023 at the University of Music and Theatre ‘Felix Mendelssohn Bartholy’ Leipzig with Prof. Carola Guber in the master's programme in opera singing. During her studies, she appeared in numerous opera productions, for example as Zweite Dame in ‘The Magic Flute’, Marcellina and Cherubino in ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ by W. A. Mozart, as Fidalma in ‘Il matrimonio segreto’ by D. Cimarosa, in the title role in B. Britten's ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ and as Frau Reich in ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. She appeared in over 40 performances as Marcellina in the successful production of ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ by the Munich Chamber Opera. She made her house debut at the Leipzig Opera in the current 2024/2025 season as Sandmännchen in ‘Hänsel und Gretel’ by E. Humperdinck. In addition, she will take on the role of Maddalena in the new production of ‘Il viaggio a Reims’ by G. Rossini in March 2025.
She can be heard as a soloist in sacred and secular concerts, song recitals and a wide range of other performances. She performs as a song duo with the pianist Amelie Warner and, as part of this, has received lessons from Prof. Alexander Fleischer and Prof. Gerold Huber in the Würzburg Lied class. Together they were participants in the Udo Reinemann International Masterclass in Brussels in the 2023/2024 season. During this time, the song duo was selected to give their own recital at the French festival ‘Les Heures Romantiques entre Loir et Loire’. They reached the final of the 2024 International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau. They are prizewinners in two categories in the International Student Lied Duo Competition in Groningen.
Nina Schumertl is also the winner of the 2022 Lions Music Competition in the North Bavarian district and a 2023 scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association Würzburg. She received third place in the 2024 Leipzig Singing Prize.
Further important impulses were provided by her participation in masterclasses with, among others, KS Brigitte Fassbaender, Laura Aikin, Werner Güra, KS Thomas Quasthoff, Christiane Iven, Julia Kleiter, Jard van Nes and Arnold Bezuyen.
