British soprano Olivia Moss is currently based between Helsinki and London. Olivia is already garnering international experience, with performances in Greece, Italy and Sweden alongside her extensive performances across the UK and Finland. Olivia’s upcoming engagements include concerts at the Luosto Soi! Festival in Lapland and singing in the Italian premiere of Paul Carr’s ‘Four New Seasons’.
Recent performance highlights include singing Charlotte in Krenek’s Der Diktator, with the esteemed Tapiola Sinfonietta, Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Sibelius Academy Opera), the title role in Handel’s Semele (Sibelius Summer Academy/Vantaa BRQ Festival) and in three concerts for Kaija Saariaho’s 70th Birthday Festival.
Olivia has been widely praised for her interpretive abilities and stage presence. She was awarded Second Prize in the Helsinki Lied Competition 2021, alongside her duo partner Kumi Shimozaki and she was a finalist in the Boosey & Hawkes international Sing Finzi competition 2021. Olivia was awarded The Gus Christie Award 2018 from Glyndebourne, an honour given to support a young singer with exceptional promise.
Olivia made her Royal Festival Hall debut as soprano soloist in Bernstein’s Mass, under the baton of Marin Alsop. Other roles include Suor Dolcina in Puccini’s Suor Angelica (Heraklion Piano Festival, Crete) and Caterina in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz (Sibelius Academy Opera, Helsinki). Olivia has covered twice for Suor Genovieffa (Suor Angelica) and for Yulia in the world premiere production of Uljas Pulkkis’ All the Truths We Cannot See (Sibelius Academy Opera). In scene studies, Olivia has sung Violetta (La Traviata), Gilda (Rigoletto), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Tytania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
A keen performer of contemporary music, Olivia has been praised for her musicality and vocal colours in her approach to modern repertoire. She has premiered several works as a soloist and has collaborated with the Chimera Ensemble (York), the York Composers’ Collective (York), Philomel (London) and Oblivia (Helsinki). Olivia was part of the working group for the new opera Obsessions by Yiran Zhao. Her other work on the concert stage includes soprano solos for Bach’s St John Passion, Handel’s Messiah, Handel’s Israel in Egypt and Dvorak’s Te Deum, amongst others and recently sang the solo cantata Arion by Campra. Olivia is also featured on the film soundtrack for The Postcard Killings (Good Films Collective) and sang in Lee Mingwei’s Sonic Blossom at the Ateneum National Gallery in Helsinki.
Olivia completed her Masters Degree at the Sibelius Academy in Finland, under the tutelage of Outi Kähkönen and Collin Hansen. During her studies, Olivia had the privilege of working with other distinguished coaches, such as Ilmo Ranta, Tuuli Lindeberg, Antti Suhonen, Kristian Attila, and conductors, such as Markus Lehtinen, Justin Doyle and Eamonn Dougan. Prior to her Master’s studies, Olivia studied with Rosa Mannion and Mary King after graduating from the University of York with a BA (Hons) in Music in 2016. Olivia has taken part in masterclasses with Anu Komsi, Hartmut Höll, Soile Isokoski, Andreas Schmidt, Joan Rodgers, Mary King, John Ramster and David Gowland and was selected for studies at the Glyndebourne Academy, British Youth Opera workshops programme, the Oxenfoord International Summer School Opera Programme, the Abingdon Summer School for Solo Singers, Morley College Opera School and the Savonlinna Summer Academy.
Olivia is married to composer Joel Järventausta, and they share their home with their Hungarian Vizsla, Elvis.
