"Conversely, the Ukrainian mezzo-soprano, Oryna Veselovska, her English diction as impeccable as it is exemplary, drew us in with an effortless, warm-toned delivery and sensitivity to the text, in what turned out to be the evening’s most moving performance" - Seen and Heard International (2024)
Oryna Veselovska is a London based Ukrainian mezzo-soprano with a versatile repertoire range, who is particularly passionate about being true in her expressivity.
Oryna completed her Bachelor degree in opera singing with Honours at the Ukrainian National Academy of Music. During her Bachelor programme she studied and performed such roles as La Badessa in Suor Angelica, Flora in Traviata and Annio in La clemenza di Tito.
She recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with the Master of Arts degree with Distinction. While studying at the Academy with Kate Paterson and Jonathan Papp, Oryna has enjoyed performing various roles in opera scenes, working with conductors Christopher White and Peter Robinson and directors David Antrobus, Eleanor Burke and Victoria Newlyn. These roles include Charlotte in Werther, Lucretia in Rape of Lucretia, Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito.
Oryna has a growing interest in oratorio. In April 2024 Oryna sang alto solo in Handel’s Messiah with Sudbury Choral Society, conducted by John Chillingworth, her singing being reviewed by Seen and Heard International as “the evening’s most moving performance”.
Oryna is particularly interested in contemporary music and collaboration with emerging composers. In November 2022 she participated in performance of “What leaf? What mushroom?” for eight voices and detachable electronics by Hani Elias. In 2023 she became a part of the Academy Improvisers Ensemble, exploring possibilities of improvisation and extended techniques in classical singing, and in the same year she performed “Dancing in the Void” for mezzo-soprano, electronics and projection by Archie John, written specifically for her along with a Sri Lankan animator Irushi Tennakoon.
Oryna is determined to perform and promote music written by Ukrainian composers. She enjoyed performing Ukrainian art songs in a concert of Ukrainian classical music “Music Will Live” in January 2023, as well as being part of the concert “Sounds of Ukraine” in November of the same year. In March 2023 together with conductor Max Levytsky and composer Alisa Zaika she co-organized the Ukrainian choral music benefit concert presenting choral works by Ukrainian composers based on texts of a famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko as a mezzo-soprano soloist and a member of choir.
