Rosel Labone has been praised by such operatic luminaries as international soprano Carol Vaness for her "young, vibrant, and colorful" voice and by master voice teacher Bill Schuman as having "great potential and possibilities". For the past year, she has been performing oratorio and concert repertoire at venues around Manhattan, and was invited to participate in the live rounds of the Classical Singing Competition in Boston.

In 2014 she was offered a travel scholarship and an internship to the UK and US as a young artist at Opera North. She continues to be in demand as an artist on the stage, studio and concert platform. in 2018 she performed with world-renowned repetiteur Graham Johnson at Government House in Perth, and in 2017 found herself in the studio again as the voice behind Australian composer Pete Hawke's suite 'Arabia'.

As an international artist Ms. Labone has received outstanding reviews for her performances in both dramatic and comedic repertoire. Her diverse creative background combines with a broad theatrical and vocal range and natural warmth, flair and musicality to create captivating moments on stage. Critics were enthusiastic about her “panache for comedy” (Jo Hodgson, Theatre Review) in her most recent performances as Carlotta in the Phantom of the Opera for Wellington Musical Theatre. Her concert work has been praised as “outstanding, sensitive, refined, and confidently projected” (Bronislaw Sozanski, The Ballarat Courier) and “characterful and sonorous” (Peter Mechen, Middle C.) She is a persuasive actress with the capacity to both move and entertain an audience.

Ms. Labone’s distinctive burnished copper timbre and dramatic intensity has allowed her to traverse a wide range of styles and genres in her career to date. Recent operatic roles include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Jenny in The Threepenny Opera, Galatea in Acis and Galatea, and the Mother in Hansel and Gretel. She has worked in collaboration with local artists to produce outdoor operas, with plans to stage an outdoor market version of Cosi fan tutte complete with chamber orchestra later this year. Recently she founded opera company ‘Modus Operandi’ with a vision to connect emerging artists and established professionals. Other projects include travelling to France to perform in historic locations such as Le Quesnoy (Patricia Hurley Opera Tours) and bringing opera to local communities with The Song Company in Australia.

As an accomplished concert artist and recitalist, Ms. Labone has sung with orchestras across New Zealand and Australia, including the Melbourne Musicians featuring Metropolitan Opera star Elena Xanthoudakis at Melba Hall. She recently performed with the Kronos Quartet and the Consort of Melbourne at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and has also sung with Opera Australia at the same venue.

Ms. Labone is a graduate (BMus Hons) of the New Zealand School of Music, majoring in Performance Voice, and also holds a BA in English Literature from Victoria University of Wellington. She attended the Melbourne Opera Studio where she was generously supported by a Lauris Elms award, and is an alumna of the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School. She has been a semi-finalist and finalist in many competitions including the Herald Sun Aria and the Melbourne Philharmonic Aria. In 2014 she won the Most Oustanding Competitor award at the Dame Malvina Major Foundation Aria Competition in New Zealand. She has been invited to participate in several international vocal competitions in Europe and Asia.

Ms. Labone recently secured places and scholarships at several prestigious graduate music programmes, including the Royal Northern College of Music and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
