Sam has held cathedral lay clerkships at Truro, Ely and Christ Church Oxford and has developed a thriving private teaching practice. Now based in Greenwich, he enjoys teaching with a focus on developing and maintaining a flexible and healthy technique that serves the narrative of the music, combining long term exercises with repertoire that tailors to the student's aims and needs.
As a singer Sam works regularly with many professional ensembles including The Sixteen, Tenebrae and The BBC Singers. He also sings with many of London’s acclaimed church choirs, including those at the London Oratory, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Tower of London. Since January 2016, Sam has been a member of the internationally acclaimed vocal group The Gesualdo Six. Specialising in mainly music from the Renaissance, they were St John’s Smith Square Young Artists 2015- 2016 and can frequently be heard on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Other notable performances involved an appearance at the BBC Proms in 2023 and two performances at Wigmore Hall in 2021 and 2022.
Equally at home as a soloist, Sam has performed solos in Handel's Messiah and Saul, Bach's St Matthew Passion, St John Passion and Christmas Oratorio and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. In 2016 he gave a complete performance Schubert’s Winterreise, alongside composer and pianist Sebastian Black . On the operatic stage he has performed an impressive variety of scenes including extracts from the roles of Figaro, Rigoletto, and Prospero in Ades’ The Tempest (Manchester University Opera Scenes), Vicar/ Budd in Britten’s Albert Herring, Harlequin in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, Thesée in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie and Raleigh/ Mountjoy in Britten's Gloriana (Trinity Laban).
