Sophie Whelan is a 23-year-old soprano from Dublin, Ireland, currently in her third year of a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, studying with Professor David Pollard. In 2025, she was selected for the Glyndebourne Academy.
She has performed in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Charles Stewart, Bach’s Cantata BWV 150 with the Guildhall Baroque Orchestra conducted by Stephan Loges, and Holst’s The Planets with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra under Alpesh Chauhan. She has also appeared as guest soprano with the Celtic Tenors, the North Dublin Singers, the Dublin Youth Choir, and the Dublin Youth Chamber Choir.
Her Musical Theatre and Opera Scenes roles include Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Norina (Don Pasquale), Gilda (Rigoletto), Marmee (Little Women), Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Mary Crawford (Mansfield Park), and the Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia). She has also performed in Guildhall’s BMUS Opera Project (The Fairy Queen / A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
Sophie has participated in masterclasses with Dame Ann Murray, Sir Thomas Allen, Matteo Dalle Fratte, Sophie Grimmer, and Sophie Muñoz, and in 2024 was awarded the Junior Charles Wood Song Competition prize for best performance of a Charles Wood song.
