Competitions

Winner of The Emmy Destinn Young Singers Awards (Emmy Destinn Foundation) (2017)

Finalist in the John Kerr Award for English Song (2016)

"Intelligent and vocally splendid." Mel Cooper (playstosee.com) (2019)

"Syme, a former Britten-Pears Young Artist, and winner of the Emmy Destinn Young Singers award, has, for my money, an exciting voice: forceful and domineering - and pained - as suits this particular role … I was impressed by her every time she came on stage." Roderic Dunnett (Classical Music Daily) (2019)

“With the appearance of Zita Syme as a pugnacious, intelligent and vocally splendid Juno in a striking red dress, who came with her two peacocks (dancers with peacock heads), the whole thing took off.” Mel Cooper (playstosee.com) (2019)

“Zita Syme is a very accomplished Giunone who displays an extremely well developed soprano.” Sam Smith (Music OMH) (2019)

Apart from the range and the masterful performance, the panel appreciated the silky tone, which she lends to her soprano. (Ivan Kytka: Xantypa magazine: December 2017)

First Prize was awarded to soprano Zita Syme whose excellent Czech (particularly in Rusalka's aria O marno to je) marked her whole programme. (Jan Jůn : Velehrad News Bulletin, December 2017)

Zita Syme was engaging as Zerlina, particularly in her perfectly pitched indecision in the famous aria La ci darem la mano. (Itchen Valley News : Don Giovanni 2016)

She won first prize in the 2017 Emmy Destinn Young Singers Competition for Czech music and has given solo London recitals of this repertoire for both the Britten-Pears and Emmy Destinn Foundations.

Recent and forthcoming roles include Giunone/La Calisto (Longborough Festival Opera), Antonia/Tales of Hoffmann, Mimi/La bohème, Rosalinde/Die Fledermaus for Opera in Oborne, Dido/Dido and Aeneas (Surrey Opera) and Elsa/The Grand Duke (Buxton International Festival). Zita has also sung with Opera Holland Park, Opera Della Luna, Opera Australia, and OperaUpClose.

Recent concert engagements include Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden and solo recitals at St James’s Piccadilly, The National Portrait Gallery and at Château De Montcaud in the Music Festival d’Orange. For Naxos, she has recorded Herbert Howells's Hymnus Paradisi and movie soundtracks for Shrek the Third and Prince Caspian.

Zita studies with Neil Baker and has been kindly supported by the Nicholas Boas Charitable Trust.
