It was such a pleasure catching up with contralto Stephanie Maitland in Vienna since she won By Voice Alone’s Development Award back in 2019. The By Voice Alone panel were completely drawn to Stephanie’s striking lower register, and jury member Michelle Williams, Casting Director at English National Opera, had the inspired idea to connect Stephanie with legendary international mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, a partnership which has shaped Stephanie’s voice and career to date.

Stephanie is presently a Young Artist at the Wiener Staatsoper, where she has recently been playing Roßweiße in Die Walküre. At the end of her two years at Vienna, Stephanie joins the ensemble of the Volksoper Wein where her upcoming roles include Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Mary in Der fliegende Holländer, Marta in Iolanta, Third Lady in the Magic Flute as well as Frau Reich in The Merry Wives of Windsor.
