"As the vicar Gedge, Shaun Aquilina made an impact from his very first notes with a baritone of uncharacteristic warmth, full and unforced." http://bachtrack.com/review-albert-herring-hampstead-garden-opera-november-2014 (2014)

"Shaun Aquilina (as the Reverend Mr Gedge) combined a limpid, almost Schubertian beauty of tone with good comic timing." Alice McVeigh, DailyClassicalMusic.com, on Albert Herring, Hampstead Garden Opera (2014)

Royal Academy of Music
2012–2014

Baritone Shaun Aquilina studied at the Royal Academy of Music, under Alex Ashworth and Mary Hill, completing his MA in June 2014.

He is a frequent performer on the operatic stage, most recently singing the Vicar, Mr Gedge, in Hampstead Garden Opera’s Albert Herring. Critics praised his voice for its “uncharacteristic warmth” and “beauty of tone”.

He has also performed scenes from The Magic Flute (Papageno), La Boheme (Marcello), Rinaldo (Argante), Il Matrimonio Segreto (Conte), and L’Italiana in Algeri (Taddeo). Chorus work includes Eugene Onegin and Ariodate for Royal Academy Opera, and Zar Und Zimmerman (Opera South).

Shaun enjoys being part of the Philharmonia Chorus. He has performed major works from the choral and symphonic repertoire including Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Venues have included the BBC Proms, Royal Festival Hall, and the Palau de la Musica in Valencia.

Recital work has included songs from major cycles by Schubert and Schumann, alongside the work of Britten, Vaughan Williams, Tchaikovsky and Fauré. He made his oratorio debut in Eastbourne as the baritone soloist in Puccini’s Messa Di Gloria.

In 2013, Shaun travelled to Liguria in Northern Italy, to sing scenes from La Nozze di Figaro (Il Conte), La Cenerentola (Dandini) and Rigoletto (Rigoletto). He followed these performances with scenes from the French repertoire in Cratoule, France: Lakmé (Frédéric) and Glover (La Jolie Fille de Perth).

Shaun has participated in masterclasses with Austrian baritone Florian Boesch and English mezzo Sarah Walker CBE. He has also worked with conductors Daniel Harding, Jane Glover, and Julian Reynolds.
